Patriot Guard Riders honor fallen veteran
When members of Joseph Mangus' family laid him to rest last Wednesday at the Penrose Cemetery following a memorial service in Lovell, he had a couple dozen extra friends there to show their support and respect - regional members of the Patriot Guard Riders.
In a strong and moving display of patriotic pride, more than a dozen members of the Riders lined East Main in Lovell in front of Haskell Funeral Home. Inside, family members, colleagues and state and military officials paid their repects to Mangus, who had just returend home on March 31 from his second tour of duty in Iraq with B Company of the 2/300th Field Artillery Battalion of the Wyoming Army National Guard.
Mangus, 36, died April 10 in Louisville, Colo. He was a deputy for the Fremont County Sheriff's Dept. in Lander.
Among those attending Mangus' service Wednesday, April 18, were Gov. Dave Freudenthal, Wyoming National Guard Adjutant General Ed Wright, and other military officials. Outside, the Patriot Guard riders stood by, then followed the procession to the Penrose Cemetery west of Byron, where both Mangus's father and grandfather are buried.
According to great uncle Ferrell Mangus, Joseph Mangus' gandfather was Ferrell's brother Henry, who lived in Lovell and was killed in an oil field accident in 1951. After Henry died , his children Doyle, Pat and Gerald were raised by Dutch and Doris Hoffman.
Gerald married Ruth Fillerup, and after he returned from serving in the U.S. Navy, the family located in Colorado. Gerald Mangus was killed in a car crash in 1976 when a drunk diver hit him while he was returning home from work.
According to his obituary, Joseph Mangus was born July 26, 1970, in Leadville, Colo., and graduated from Centaurus High School in 1989. He enlisted in the Army in 1990 and served in the first Gulf War, Operation Desert Shield. He later served two tours in Iraq with the Wyoming National Guard, volunteering for the second tour "because he strongly believed that the people of Iraq deserved the same freedoms he had, " his obituary reads.
He worked as a sheriffs deputy in both Colorado and in Lander, and Mangus said eight to 10 Fremont Count colleagues and several more from Colorado attended his service Wednesday.
Mike Jameson of Haskell Funeral Home said only a gaveside service was initially scheduled, since the main funeral service had been held Monday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Louisville, but the memorial service was then scheduled.
Joseph Mangus is survived by his daughter Ashley L. Mangus, of Tucson, Ariz." his mother, Ruth Fillerup Mangusof Louisville; and siblings Ruth Anne Merrick, Gerald Mangus, Vennie Mangus and Camilla Moyer. He was preceded in death by his father and a son, Allen R. Mangus.

died 10 May 2012, Lovell, Big Horn, Wyoming
funeral 12 May 2012 Saturday
burial 14 May 2012 MondayNancy Hopkin Smith
Sept. 11, 1941 – May 10, 2012
Nancy Hopkin Smith was the firstborn child of Fredrick Wilson Hopkin and Dorcas Lea Waltman. She was born on Sept. 11, 1941, in Powell. In her usual impatient fashion, not being able to wait for the loved ones that were in route to say goodbye, she died peacefully with her sisters Janet and Debbi at her side in Lovell, at the North Big Horn Hospital.
Nancy lived most of her growing up years on the family dairy farm en Penrose, attending school in Powell. The school said that she went around the world twice on their school bus. Nancy graduated from Powell High School in 1959. After a year at Northwest Community College, Nancy graduated from the Billings Business College. From Billings, Nancy moved to Cheyenne. After a short stay there she moved with a friend to Huntington W. Va., where she met Bill Smith. Nancy and Bill were blessed with three beautiful daughters, Shauna, Tracey and Nikki.
Nancy spent many years raising horses and hound dogs and driving the narrow roads of the hollers of West Virginia and then Ohio. Nancy made the most of living in the south, but her heart was still always home in the Big Horn Basin. Nancy returned to Wyoming in 1989, living first in Lovell, then Byron and finally in her beloved Powell. She returned to Northwest College, studying art, history and political science subjects.
Nancy worked many years at the IGA Foodbasket and then at McDonald’s until she became ill with cancer in January 2009, when she was finally forced to quit working all together. Beating the odds, Nancy won the battle against cancer, retiring to the Powell Valley Care Center where she would spend the next three years writing, reading and painting. Recognizing Nancy’s unique artistic abilities, the care center staff invited her to paint the dining area windows and write an article for the monthly newsletter.
Nancy began to have difficulties with her kidneys at the beginning of this year, resulting in numerous stays at the Billings Clinic. Consequently, she was forced to move into the long-term facility in Laurel. Nancy was taken from there on May 9 to the Billings Clinic emergency room by ambulance. Once there, under the advice of the physicians, Nancy chose to come home to the Big Horn Basin for her final hours.
Nancy was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her daughters, Shona (Don) Rutt of Scottown, Ohio; Tracey (Curt) Runyan of Springfield, Ohio and Nikki Gannon of Coal Grove, Ohio,;seven grandchildren and one great-grandson; sisters Janet (John) Kobielusz and Kathi (Dennis) Pittman, both of Gillette and Debbi (Dave) Keele of Lovell; brother Carl Hopkin of Aurora, Colo.; numerous nieces and nephews; Uncle Burch and Aunt Ruby Hopkin, and Aunt Alyce Hopkin, all of Powell; as well as numerous cousins.
A memorial service was held May 12, 2012, at Haskell Funeral Home with interment in the Penrose Cemetery on May 14, 2012.

died 24 May 2012 Lovell, Big Horn, Wyoming
Funeral 28 May 2012 Monday
Buried 29 May 2012 TuesdayHenry Alfred Boyles
Feb. 21, 1928 – May 24, 2012
Henry Alfred Boyles was born to T. Elmer and May (McCormick) Boyles on Feb. 21, 1928, in Hawarden, Iowa. He died on May 24, 2012, at the age of 84 at the New Horizons Care Center in Lovell.
As a child, Henry enjoyed working on a farm owned by his parents. He was skilled at many things as an adult but most enjoyed owning a service station and working as a mechanic. He could fix many things and enjoyed doing that as a service to others.
Henry married Alona Arlene Waterman in Hawarden, Iowa, on March 28, 1948. Together they raised four children, Sandra (Rejanaul) Pelletier, Lonnie (Denise), Michael and Julie King. He had 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Henry was a lifelong member of the National Hunting Association. His greatest love was spending time in the mountains where he could take in all the beauty it has to offer while fishing and hunting. Throughout his life, he made many memorable hunting trips to Wyoming and had always desired to move west. In the mid-1990s, Henry fulfilled that dream by moving to Lovell to be near the mountains. He purchased a small house and lived a happy, full life hunting, fixing cars and driving out to the habitat or up to the mountain to view the wildlife.
Shortly after moving to Lovell, Henry formed a special relationship with his neighbors, Dave and Sharon Phelps, and became a grandpa to their children, Shelby (Jason) Happe, Sierra and Derek. Henry appointed himself chauffeur for these children and took them to and from school for over 15 years until his illness started in November 2011. Henry attended many sporting events, school and church programs to watch his “kids” perform. Henry had a ready smile for any child and loved laughing at the antics of children.
Henry’s life was blessed with other special relationships. Those included his nephew, Darvin (Peggy) Boyles of Idaho Falls, and his best friend, hunting, and fishing buddy “Old Baldy,” Art Camarena.
Henry led a simple life but deeply touched those with the fortune to have known him. Thank you to those who brought him much joy and happiness. He was truly blessed.
Funeral services were held Monday, May 28, at Haskell Funeral Home in Lovell. Burial was in the Penrose Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the family online at www.haskellfuneralhome.com.
