Five Die Sunday In Car-Bus Wreck
Five people met death and several were injured in the worst highway accident yet recorded in this part of the state. Hurtling along over the highway after spending the early hours of Sunday moring at the New Village Inn, roadhouse, ...parlor and dance hall near Warren, Mont., the five who met death collided with a northbound Burlington trailway bus about one mile the other side of Deaver.
Traveling at an undetermined speed variously estimated by officials and others investigating the accident, at 75 to 80 miles per hour or more, the Chevrolet coach in which the five were riding failed to ...gtiate the curve in the highway and struck the bus almsot head on. The bus was traveling at a speed ... to exceed 50 to 55 miles per ...as this type of bus is reg...ed with a governor allowing a maximum speed of 55. As all occupants of the Lovell car, which ...ded Gerald Waters, owner, Otis ...is, Shirley Shoemaker, La...a Mangus and Ralph Yates of...y, were instantly killed the..information on the accident was...ed from the driver and passengers of the bus. One passenger of the bus was ridinng in the fond ....with the driver and stood up ... he was the oncoming car was ... to strike them. These people ..ed the approaching car was on the wrong side of the highway when ...came into view over the top of the hill several yards away, and was unable to get over onto the right side of the road. The bus ... as far to the right as possible, tracks showing that it even moved over off the oiled surfaxce onto the left shoulder ot try and avoid the crash.
So terrific was the impact of the ... cars in neeting that all of the ....mants of the smaller vehicle were ...her thrown clear out or nearly ... of the wreck. Several of them. were horribly dismembered and dis...ed and all sustained cuts and broken bones. The Chevrolet was practically demolished, only the rear portion being in shape for towing er the wrecking car had picked ... the front end.
The force of the blow did not dmage the large bus as much as the smaller car, but as it weighs ... 9 tons it is easily understod ... the occupants escaped serious ..injury. The driver had some fractured ribs, and another occupant was brought to the local hosipital for treatment, while a couple of others had cuts and abrasions treated at the scene of the accident. The bus ..erved to the left after the smaller car had demolished the left from wheel, and came to a stop on the left side of the highway with the front end against the borrow pit bank.
Happening shortly after daylight, it was ome fiew minutes before any one came along to report the affair, the bus driver having started to wald to Deaver. Two men who had gone to Warren at about 1:30 with ... of those who were killed had ... to make connectin on the return trip, their places being taken

Oldtime Westerner Succumbs to Attack of Flu-Pneumonia
Struggling with a heart ailment that seemed incurable and month after month growing weaker, Frank McCartney, oldtimer of the west, needed but a slight attack of influenza to bring his stuggle with ill health to an end. Powell people and those of the entire Big Horn basin country, where McCartney labored for years as a sheepshearer, farmer and miner, knew him. For months last winter he was a patient at the Whitlock hospital, where he suffered with a very bad heart. McCartney went from the hospital here to the Ed Jones ranch at Penrose last summer, and it was at this home that he died last Tuesday morning at 3 o'clock. Mr. Jones was with him when he breathed his last and he and the attending physician made some effort to get from him information concerning the whereabouts of any relatives he might have, but they learned nothing. It is known that McCartney was born in Livingston, New York, June 6, 1866 - 59 years ago - and efforts are being made to trace his family connections from that point. He was a hardworking, saving sort of oldtimer, and had lived about, Cody, Worland and Meeteetse in years past. He leaves some property, and Mr. Jones, with the assistance of Attorney Goppert, are looking into his affairs, under authority of Judge Metz, that his modest savings in two or three Big Horn basin banks may be ascertained.
In July, 1925, McCartney accepted of the Mormon faith, and under the auspices of this religious denominaton his body is being laid at rest this afternoon at the Penrose cemetery.

Fire Accitent Claims Life of Penrose Man
Death relieved the suffering of Orvil Wasden of Penrose Tuesday morning after he had been fatally burned 24 hours earlier at his home. He received the burns when a large oil can, containing tractor fuel, exploded as he was pouring from it into a fire in a stove. The fuel saturated his clothing after the explosion and he ran from the house and for some distance before Mrs. Wasden overtook him and threw a quilt around him. The first quilt was also burned and a second was needed to completely smother the flames.
The couple then drove in a truck loaded with coal to the home of his parents, where Dr. Graham of Powell was called and immediately after the examination he was taken to the Lovell Hospital where he was treated to ease his suffering. He remained conscious during Monday and passed away just 24 hours after his accident.
As a result of the fire in the home the kitchen was completely burned, but neighbors controlled the blaze before much other damage was done.
Funeral arrangements have not been announced, as a brother is expected to arrive from California today or tomorrow.
