When Ella was nine, her mother died, and being the oldest daughter at home, she had a lot of responsibilities, for her younger brother and sister and the home.
Her father spent the summers at a tie camp in the mountains. Her father was in a crippling accident and from then on, supported his family from what he could earn at a cobbler's bench.
When Ella and Nettie, who was two years younger, were old enough they helped by hiring out to do housework. Later on they both became dressmakers.
Ella was married to John Thomas Watts in the Salt Lake Temple, Feb. 4, 1904. John had come to Big Horn country in 1902, and had resolved to make his home here, so he brought his bride to the Big Horns.

Their first two years here were spent at Shell Creek, where John worked for Jess Smith. At this time he and Jesse filed on two homesteads southwest of Byron. Jesse died in 1905, but in the meantime he had given his homestead to his daughter, Maggie, and these two homesteads became the family homes of the Watts and the Winzenreids for many years.
John worked on all the early improvement projects, building canals, roads, bridges, etc. Gathering logs for homes and riding for cattle, they farmed around Penrose until the canal was finally completed, to bring water to the homestead. They belonged to the Penrose ward.
Five children were born to them, Jesse, Ella, Parley, Evelyn, and Dolly Eva. They went to school at Byron. During this time, the older son, Henry lost his life in battle in France in 1918. Years later Ella was permitted to visit his grave while on a Gold Star Pilgrimage as a guest of our government.
Ella worked in the Relief Society, M.I.A., and Sunday School for years.
John died, Jan. 1, 1935 after eight years of illness. Ella stayed on at the farm, though she was often alone as the children got married or sought work. Sometimes she got a job herself. Then she went to stay with her daughter, Ella, who was teaching school at Kane. She spend one winter with a cousin at Mesa, Ariz., doing temple work. She sold her farm a few years ago and lived in an apartment in Byron. Later she bought a trailer house and stayed at Deaver near Evelyn and last year she stayed in her trailer near Mary, at Lovell. In July she went to Price, Utah with Dolly Eva. There she had the flu and she never could recover from the effects of it, she died Christmas morning in the Price hospital where she had been taken the night before. Two Byron Men Killed by Fumes
A tragic accident took the lives of two Byron men Monday morning when Parley D. Watts, 57, and Gene Belston, 42, were overcome by fumes in a tank truck.
They were employed by Nepeco, an oil contracting firm owned by Art Petrich.
Belston was inside the tank to make repairs and was overcome by fumes. When he was heard to fall down inside the tank, Watts, the only man small enough to enter went in after Belston.
He was only in a couple of minutes, Petrich said, when he was also overcome by the fumes. A blower fan was put on the tank and other employees dragged the two men out and gave them artificial respiration.A few minutes later Deputy Sheriff Norm Doerr and Lovell firemen Elmer Stevens and Don Dover, accompanied by Dr. John Story, arrived with mechanical breathing apparatus. But the two victims failed to respond. Petrich reported that the tank truck had been used to haul water for the three days preceding the accident, and before that had been used to haul crude oil.
Both victims were experienced, Parley Watts had been with the company for nine years and Belston eight years.
Other employees helping with the rescue were Dave Pierceson, Neil Peters, Walt Stevens and Tom Lynch.
Funeral services were held for Gene Belston Wednesday in Byron. He is survived by his wife and four children.
Services will be held today for Parley Watts, also in Byron. He is survived by a daughter.

Calvin Wasden Johnson, age 85, of Monroe, passed away March 27, 2015, in Richfield.
Cal was the fourth child and third son of Alvin and Sofe Johnson, born in the family home at Lovell, Wyo., Aug. 5, 1929.
He learned the value of work early, helping in the family lumber business with his dad and brothers. This core value of work served him well, even to the point where health no longer allowed him to do what he loved to do best.
He loved animals and enjoyed caring for them. He had a great sense of humor. When nobody was around to hear his jokes, it’s easy to imagine him telling his stories and jokes to the animals.
Cal was good at whatever he undertook, whether it was building houses, plumbing or electrical work, and he ran his own plumbing company for many years.
Cal was a humble, spiritual man. As a member of the LDS church, he had a strong conviction of eternal bonds with family after this physical life has ended. While living in Salt Lake City, he was a close friend and home teacher to President Gordon B. Hinckley.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Ellie, Monroe; and his children, Luren (Linda) Johnson, Tacoma, Wash.; Karen Johnson Marion, St. George; Christy Johnson; Marlan (Diana) Johnson; Jerry Johnson, all Casper, Wyo.; Patty (Jim) Chapman, West Valley City; Sandy Neumeier, Enoch; Jim and Bob Rouselle, Riverton, Wyo.; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
