Frank S. Griffin
Sept. 29, 1894 -- Dec. 28, 1998
Frank Stephen Griffin of Springville, Utah, formerly of Byron, died Monday morning, Dec. 28, at Utah Valley Hospital in Provo at the age of 104.
He was born in a one room log cabin at Fenton, or what was called Mormon Bend, between Burlington and Meeteetse, Wyo., on Sept. 29, 1984, to William S. and Sally Perry Griffin. In 1901 the family moved to a farm south of Byron where Frank spent his early years.
In 1913 he was called to serve a misssion for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Southern States Mission and spent two years in North Carolina. Frank was an active member of the church throughout his life and served in many responsible positions, including High Priests' Group Leader and Bishop's Counselor. He was a generous supporter of missionary work and in later years a benefactor of Ricks College and Northwest College.
On Oct. 7, 1929, he married Vinetta Robertson of Cowley in the Salt Lake Temple, a marriage that lasted for 57 years before her death on July 25, 1987.
Frank and Vinetta lived in Los Angels, Calif. for eight years early in their marriage before returning to Byron in 1937 and settling on the Griffin family farm. They raised a large garden every year until he was in his 80s and canned from it as well as from their fruit trees. They also enjoyed riding the horses they kept on their farm. In additon to farming, Frank worked for the Big Horn County Weed & Pest Control District for many years.
In 1969, Frank and Vinetta bought a home in Springville, Utah, so they could be close to the LDS Temple and attend the cultural events at BYU. They spent the winter months there and returned to the ranch in the spring. After his wife's death, Frank spent less time at the ranch but would make the trip from Utah to Wyoming by car until he reached age 98 when he was refused a renewal of his driver's license.
Frank was able to remain in his own home until the time of his passing, needing the help of a young couple during the past three years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Vinetta, and a son, Clyde, who died in 1986. Survivors include a sister, Rose Doty, of Byron, and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at Haskell Funeral Home in Lovell on Thursday, Dec. 31, at 2 p.m. Burial will be in the Byron Cemetery.
