Meeting: October 26, 2009 at the Cody Senior Center in Cody at 7:00 p.m.

Dinner Diners: Meet at Sunset House at 5:15 p.m.

Program: Quilt Judging

Minutes from last meeting:

Our meeting began around 7:05pm with 26 in attendance. Drinks (non-alcoholic, of course) and a scrumptious "THANK YOU" sheet cake (made by Evelyn Browning) for everyone involved in all the preparations and follow through of this year's YQF, were thoroughly enjoyed. Many, many hours and behind the scene efforts helped to make this one of our finest quilt shows.

  Several issues were brought up:

** The new library would like a quilt. Many ideas were suggested, some tried and true, some more innovative and challenging, but given a bit more time to think about it, we'll come up with something very clever and creative....my opinion.

** The idea of a 25th anniversary commemorative quilt? Some discussion there.

** Sheets were passed around for number of hours worked on YQF, toward our point system.

**As always, there was wonderful Show 'n Tell.

**Both Treasurer's and Secretary's reports were okayed and seconded, etc...

** RE: block presentation, Betty Dugan would like fat quarter batiks.

** Evelyn announced that we will need a Newsletter person by December. Terri Lange has done an exceptional job.

** Also, we need a nominating committee for President, Vice President, and Treasure ( thank you Sandy Cutter for taking care of business these past years) in October, for elections in November. Who's ready to step up to the plate? We've had a great year with many interesting, inspiring and creative get-togethers, considering there was no VP or Program Committee.....We've all seen what you can do via Show 'n Tell, quilt shows, etc... Everyone of you has talents and abilities to share, so why not give it a try!

**The meeting was turned over to Kathy Lichtendahl and Jeanne Knudsen, as chairs of YQF. They expressed their thanks for all the help in making our show a big success. Of the 170 quilts displayed, 28 were for exhibit only. This was our largest quilt show ever, with the addition of a special exhibit up on the stage of art quilts by "Fibrations", a Billings fiber arts group, and TAGY ( Textile Artists of Greater Yellowstone), from Cody.

Kathy reported the reception on Friday night was outstanding. We had approximately 601 paid admissions over the three day show, but perhaps closer to 700+ people actually viewed it. Expenses were $4447.88, income $5504.00, so YQF saw a profit of $1000. The Purple Cow award ($500), dedicated to Sue Ludewig, was not included in these figures.

Several discussions followed with regard to options for additional places to hold YQF, as rent in the Cody auditorium is going up considerably and the show seems to be getting bigger each year.

Another issue dealt with was whether Paintbrush Piecers Quilt Guild should be under  501C-3 or 501C-7 as to non-profit status. Kathy asked for volunteers to look into this and Marybeth Richardson and Laura Lee Mangun responded.

Lastly, several venders who participated in this year's show are already lined up for 2010. They enjoyed it all.

** Upcoming:

** On November 18, 2009 Barbara Graham's sequel to Murder By Serpents will be released. It's entitled Murder By Artifact  The Murder Quilt. Check it out on her website www.bgmysteries.com

** Kathy Lichtendahl will host October's meeting on the 26th....Topic: judging quilts.

** November's meeting will feature Sandy Cutter demonstrating sweatshirt makeovers. We'll also be bidding on baskets, using accumulated points. Please bring additional quilt related "fillers" to the October meeting to help make those baskets even more appealing.

Respectfully submitted, Jeannette Brewster for Ann Jefferis

President's Notes

I'll be in warm Ca while you are meeting on Oct 26 for our guild.  Temperatures this week in Clovis are in the 80's.   Someone has to watch their three grandsons so the parents can take a short vacation!!!   Thanks in advance to those of you doing my log cabin block.   I'll extend it until Nov. and send the extra centers for anyone who would still like to make a 12 1/2 block for me.   Just use the same hues of green and beige or whites on the opposite side.   Keep thinking about the quilt we will be making for the Park County Library here in Cody starting in Jan. We hope to assign or volunteer which block we would like you to make at the Jan. 25, 2010 meeting.   See you soon ----  Sincerely a grammie quilter.  Evelyn Browning  p.s. we will be voting in Nov. for officers --- contact one of us to volunteer to serve.

Your President, Evelyn Browning

2009 Quilt Challenge is "Memory Lane"

It is due at the March 2010 meeting, so you have plenty of time to plan.  With the March deadline, these will be ready in time to show at the Cody Country Art League Quilt Show in April.

The Challenge Committee wants unique quilts for this challenge.

No look-a-likes here.  You choose your favorite colors.  You choose what size quilt you want, from wall hanging to king-size.

This quilt will be uniquely yours because it is about you. As you go down "Memory Lane" with your quilt, we all will share the ride and get to know you better.  Show and tell will be lots of fun with this one.

Below are suggestions only.  You are in the driver's seat. So use this as a guide to jog those memories, and start sewing. Use traditional blocks, piecing, appliqué, painting, whole cloth or collage, etc. Printed novelty fabrics will work well here too.  This could be done as a block-a-month, if those deadlines tend to sneak up on you.

1. A Star is Born (that's you)

2. When I was young ...

3. My Pets

4. My First ... (kiss, car, job, child)

5. I Lived ... (where, how, for)

6. Best Vacation Ever

7. If I Could Be Anything, I would Be ... (a do-over opportunity)

8. Moving and Grooving (music, dance, U-Haul)

9. My Favorite Things ... (family, chocolate, sewing, garden, etc)

10. The Golden Years (if you are not there yet, make a plan)

Need help with ideas?  There is a "Memory Lane" traditional block of the month at: http://www.knoblin.com/bom2009-intro.shtml

There is also a great pattern called "All About Me" by Atkinson Designs: atkinsondesigns.com, which uses novelty fabrics.
